Singer revives Fela in her Black Girls Rock 2016 concert performance.
The singer who failed to perform at the Grammy awards was available for this event. The 10th edition of the annual award show designed for the appreciation of black women held at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark last Friday.
The live coverage of the event however aired on April 6, 2016 on BET with performances from Brandy, Andra Day, Monica, Jazmine Sullivan and MsLauryn Hill amongst others. Coupled with appearances from Rihanna and Shonda Rhimes who were amongst the recipients of the night, this year’s edition of the event became even more interesting when Lauryn Hill took the stage.
Though she began her peformance with more mellow numbers, things quickly switched up after dancers in Ankara skirts preppily dance-walked onto the stage. Laying her classic hit ‘Lost Ones’ off her 1998 album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”, on the instrumental arrangement for Fela’s 1976 hit ‘Zombie’, Lauryn Hill delivered an electric performance that had everyone dancing.
This is not the first time Lauryn Hill has identified with the late Abami Eda. While she was in Lagos in December 2015, Lauryn Hill paid a courtesy visit to Fela’s New Afrika Shrine. She was accompanied on the quasi-pilgrimage visit by Kunle Kuti, Seun Kuti, Fela’s cast member Shakira Marshall and her daughter Sarah Marley.
