Canadian Bouchard endured a difficult clay-court season, which culminated in a first-round defeat to Kristina Mladenovic at the French Open.

Continued shaky form has seen Bouchard fall out of the world's top 10 and her hopes of regaining some confidence on grass courts were dealt a blow as she fell 6-4 1-6 6-4 to Shvedova in 's-Hertogenbosch.

The top seed, runner-up at Wimbledon in 2014, was edged out in a tight first set, but stormed back to clinch the second in just 27 minutes and appeared on course for a comeback win when she raced into a 4-0 lead in the decider.

However, Bouchard fell apart as Shvedova - ranked some 65 places below her opponent - reeled off six straight games to take a thrilling win and set up a round-two clash with Marina Erakovic.

Eighth seed Johanna Larsson also exited in a 6-4 6-1 loss to Klara Koukalova, but Belinda Bencic and Mladenovic - the fourth and seventh seeds - beat Jessica Pegula and Timea Babos to reach round two.
