Sugita served 10 aces and converted two of eight break points on his way to victory.

But the weather interfered as Radek Stepanek and Edouard Roger-Vasselin were unable to finish.

Czech wildcard Stepanek took the second set 6-3 after the Frenchman had taken the first 6-3, and they will finish on Tuesday.

Ivo Karlovic and Bernard Tomic are the top two seeds at the event, with the Australian having beaten the Croatian in last year's final.
