MacLean's departure comes a day after a 4-3 win over the Vancouver Canucks broke a five-game losing streak for the Senators.
In four seasons with Ottawa, MacLean's teams went 114-90-35. He won the Jack Adams Award for coach of the year in 2013 and was a finalist in 2012 after leading the Senators to a playoff appearence one season after a last-place finish in the former Northeast Division.
Ottawa had missed the post-season in two of three seasons before MacLean took over in 2011-12.
