Raonic was likely helped by Kyrgios' fatigue, with the 19-year-old Australian " who shocked world number one Rafael Nadal just 24 hours earlier " fading in the latter stages of the contest.

The world number nine will now meet Roger Federer in the semi-finals and was understandably delighted with his win.

"It hasn't really sunk in," Raonic said.

"It's great to have that kind of win - especially at a tournament I've always wanted to play well in.

"It's another step forward. The goal is to be the best player in the world. This is one of those steps you have to take.

"I've got to do what I've been doing - take care of my serve. It's a great challenge (against Federer) and one I'm going to relish."

Federer beat Swiss compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka in four sets in his quarter-final earlier on Wednesday.
