It is the same injury that forced world number 14 Gasquet to retire against countryman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in their fourth-round clash at Wimbledon this month.

The 30-year-old Gasquet, who won bronze at the 2012 Games, has been replaced by Benoit Paire.

It will be a first Olympics appearance for Paire, the 27-year-old joining Tsonga, Monfils and Gilles Simon in the French team for the men's singles.

Paire is ranked 24 in the world, he reached a career-high of 18 in January.

Gasquet had also been due to partner Tsonga in the doubles but Monfils will now take his place. Wimbledon champions Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut make up the other pairing.
