Nigeria has moved past the genre-specific crowd, with mainstream success becoming defined by pop sounds.
R&B, like many other genres, is on the back foot, with limited content coming in from the talents. With great vocalists such as Banky W, Capital Femi, Darey, and a lot of others in our midst, we can always hope for the situation to change.
Pulse Music presents a list of artiste who Nigeria will love to have an R&B album in 2016.
Banky W
The EME singer is still Nigeria’s darling in all things R&B. Armed with the best of vocals, and the business acumen to match, Banky’s last album “R&BW”, was in 2013. 2016 needs a new project from Mr W.
Capital FEMI
Free from Kennis Music, the singer with one of the best R&B voices in Nigeria is independent and free to make music without conformist pressure from any record labels. On his day, Capital Femi can evoke love from the continent. May that day come this year when we will get an album.
Ruby Gyang
The Chocolate City singer already has an EP out, “This Is Love”. The EP makes for great listening, and opens up the possibility of a bigger project. An album with the potential to establish her as one of Nigeria’s finest.
Iyanya
For the past two albums, Iyanya has taken time away from R&B, running far from the genre, while still teasing with singles. This year, he already has an album planned, with sources saying it is a collaborative album with Banky W. We await.
Flavour
Highlife is the lifeblood of this singer, but whenever he has tried his hands at R&B, the results have been wicked. His recent single ‘Wiser’, has been a permanent fixture on the playlist of numerous R&B fans. If, and when Falvour decides to give us a genre-specific project, it will rank at the top, alongside the very best.
