Eagles fire coach Chip Kelly before season finale

Offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur will coach the team on Sunday against the New York Giants.

Kelly brought his explosive offensive system that found huge success at Oregon to Philadelphia in 2013.

The Eagles went 10-6 in each of Kelly's first two seasons, winning the NFC East in 2013.

But Kelly was given full control of the roster last January and proceeded to make several questionable moves.

The changes resulted in the Eagles failing to live up to expectations with a 6-9 record and missing the play-offs for the second straight year.

"We appreciate all the contributions that Chip Kelly made and wish him every success going forward," said Jeffrey Lurie, chairman and CEO of the Eagles.

"As I watched this season unfold, I determined that it was time to make a change."

The decision to fire Kelly came as a surprise because NFL coaches are rarely released with a game remaining.

Ed Marynowitz, vice-president of player personnel, was also released.

Tom Donahoe, former GM of the Buffalo Bills and director of football operations for the Pittsburgh Steelers and senior football advisor for the Eagles since 2012, will assume the role of senior director of player personnel.
