The tech uses a flexible sheet, which can bend and bow in different directions, as the camera. In the process, it will be able to create unique images that cannot be captured with standard cameras.

Reports reveal that researchers at Columbia University have developed a new camera concept that could drastically change how you snap pictures.

The idea behind the technology is to capture images from different angles and perspectives. According to the researchers, existing cameras can only "capture the world from a single point in space," so they tried adding camera sensors into a bendable sheet.

"If such cameras can be made at a low cost (ideally, like a roll of plastic sheet), they can be used to image the world in ways that would be difficult to achieve using one or more conventional cameras," the researchers said in a statement.

"In the most general sense, such an imaging system would enable any surface in the real world to capture visual information."

Flexible image sensors are generally believed to be an important growth area for cameras, particularly those that are used for scientific and industrial purposes.
