I am still around — Gowon debunks rumoured death
Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon has denied the rumour that he is dead.
Following the rumour of his death circulating on social media, Gowon said he is still alive and well.
According to the Nigerian Television Authority, Gowon said “I am still around and well. I am not in a hurry”
The former Head of State was quoted to have said in a statement by Adeyeye Ajayi, his personal aide.
The octogenarian dismissed the rumour of his death in the evening of Monday, October 9, 2023, after Twitter influencers and bloggers announced his death on the social media platform.
Gowon will turn 89 on Thursday, October 19, 2023.
The former military leader ruled Nigeria from 1966 to 1975. During his administration, he created the first 12 states in Nigeria.
He became Nigeria's Head of State at the age of 31. He was the youngest leader to rule Nigeria.
Gowon was Nigeria's Head of State during the civil war that started in July 1967 and ended in January 1970.
After the war, Gowon established the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to unite Nigerians.
