Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has opened up on why he fiercely opposed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambition during the 2023 elections.
In a candid revelation during a media chat, Wike said his opposition to Atiku was rooted in principle, particularly his stance on power rotation, and not out of personal disappointment or political ego.
“I wanted power to rotate,” Wike said. “After eight years of Buhari from the North, it would have been unfair for another northerner to take over. It wasn’t about being chosen or not — it was about fairness. I looked at the options, and Atiku wasn’t one.”

Dismissing the popular belief that he turned against Atiku because he wasn’t picked as the vice-presidential candidate, Wike clarified: “He never dropped me because he didn’t even pick me. I already knew from the beginning that he wouldn’t.”
The former Rivers State governor further accused Atiku of being dishonest, recounting events from their political dealings in 2019. According to Wike, Atiku, Bukola Saraki, and Uche Secondus had promised him key appointments if the PDP won, including the Attorney-General and Minister of Petroleum.
“When the legal team was set up after the election, the person who was supposed to nominate the AG wasn’t even consulted. I saw the list on TV. I called Saraki and said, ‘You people have started.’ That’s when I knew I couldn’t trust Atiku.”

Wike summed it up bluntly: “Atiku doesn’t keep his word. And I’ve never taken his words to the bank — not then, not now.”
Governor Fubara remains suspended as Rivers remains a controversial topic across the nation.
