What are the odds that a person is more likely to be killed by a selfie than a shark? Very high odds, apparently.
According to Huffington Post, accidents involving selfie-taking are now at a toll of 12 this year, overtaking the 8 deaths caused by shark attacks in 2015.
Several selfie-taking-gone-wrong incidents were recorded this year including the most recent one involving a 66-year-old Japanese tourist who died after falling down the stairs while attempting to take a photo at the Taj Mahal.
A teenage girl in Romania also died while trying to take a selfie atop a train earlier in the year, while a man in Spain was gored to death by a bull while taking a selfie at the annual bull running festival in the town of Villaseca de la Sagra.
In the recent past, some governments have recognised the potential danger selfie-taking could pose and are providing safety measures for people partaking in the craze.
Several museums and tourist attractions, including Disney World, have also banned selfie sticks in their premises.
We're all about taking a great photo, but be careful out there as you take said photos!
