READvolution by Munachi Mbonu - Joke Silva, others spark literary revolution

Held at the prestigious Glover Memorial Hall, Lagos Island, on 26 April 2024, the event welcomed over one thousand students from private and public schools across Lagos, as well as esteemed dignitaries, leading voices, and changemakers.

READvolution, which commenced in the early hours of Friday, ignited young minds with a dynamic mix of activities. Thought leaders engaged in discussions on the vital role of literacy, while a captivating keynote fireside chat featured Munachi Mbonu in conversation with Co-founder of Narrative Landscape Press, Dr Eghosa Imasuen, exploring the power of storytelling and creative processes. Rising teen poet and activist Uwaoma Nicole delivered a moving poetry presentation. The event culminated in thrilling competitions featuring over 30 participants, with Kings College Lagos triumphing in the spelling bee while Supreme Child Schools Ikorodu claimed victory in the impromptu speech challenge, showcasing exceptional talent.

Attendees were treated to a mesmerising dance drama presented by the talented drama group from Bright Achievers School Bariga. In addition, there were captivating book readings delivered by special guests and business leaders from diverse industries. Legendary Nigerian actor and producer Joke Silva added an extra dimension to the event with her engaging rendition of a compelling folktale, igniting a genuine passion for literature among all present.

"The theme of this year's World Book Day, Read Your Way, is to inspire young minds to be focused on whatever they want to achieve and be reminded of the power and joy of reading," said Munachi Mbonu, READvolution convener, author & Head Girl at Atlantic Hall Schools Lagos. She added that "to become successful leaders, young Nigerians need to have a good foundation in reading".

According to Hon. Fuad Atanda Lawal, Chairman, Eti-Osa Local Government, Lagos, "Education is always going to be the tool bridging the gap between the rich and the poor,” He admonished that “as parents and leaders in our own rights, we must continue to emphasise the importance of the reading culture."
