Madison Keys shocks Mirjana Lucic-Baroni
Top seed Madison Keys pulled off a stunning comeback to defeat Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 4-6 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-0) and reach the quarter-finals of the Internationaux de Strasbourg on Wednesday.
Already trailing by a set, American Keys went 5-0 down in the second and appeared to be heading for a hasty second-round exit.
However, she fought her way back to 5-4 and two fierce backhands led to a flawless hold, before a string of Lucic-Baroni errors in the tie-break levelled the match.
Lucic-Baroni again had a chance to win the encounter when serving at 5-4 in the decider, only for Keys to this time utilise the forehand to pull herself back before rounding off with a whitewash in the tie-break.
Keys has little time to bask in victory, though, as she will now meet Kristina Mladenovic in the last eight after the Frenchwoman saw off Alison Riske 7-6 (7-4) 6-2.
Elena Vesnina also progressed from the top half of the draw after shocking fourth seed Alize Cornet with a come-from-behind 3-6 6-0 6-3 triumph.
She now faces Virginie Razzano, who defeated Francesca Schiavone 6-2 6-3.
