"Star Trek Beyond" is an upcoming American science fiction film and the sequel to the 2013 "Star Trek Into Darkness."

The 13th film in the Star Trek film franchise, and the third installment in the reboot series, the upcoming film is directed by Justin Lin (Furious 7).

J.J. Abrams, who directed the last two films, is producing the upcoming film.

The science fiction film will have Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto reprise their roles as Captain James T. Kirk and Commander Spock, with Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, John Cho and Anton Yelchib reprising their roles from the previous film.

Newcomers include Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella.

Plot

The USS Enterprise crew, led by Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), have been attacked by a powerful unstoppable wave of unknown aliens, who destroy the Enterprise, leaving them stranded on a new planet where they find themselves in conflict with a new ruthless enemy.

The film is scheduled for a July 22, 2016 release, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise.

The new undefinedfilm features helmsman of the USS Enterprise, Hikaru Sulu, played by John Cho as openly gay.

Being the first "Star Trek" gay character, "Beyond" reveals Mr. Sulu as the father of a child with a same-sex partner.
