Here is Africa's role in rapper's new 'Please Forgive Me' short film
Drake’s creative involvement with Africa continues as the black continent plays a major role in the rapper’s new short film titled ‘Please Forgive Me’.
After almost a month of tremendous anticipation, Drake has finally released his latest short film ‘Please Forgive Me’. The project was first announced late last month (August), inspiring many fans who have put in efforts to figure out exactly what the storyline holds for viewers.
‘Please Forgive Me’ was directed by Anthony Mandler who has worked with numerous international superstars including Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift, and also collaborated with Drake earlier in his career for the music videos to "Fancy," "Find Your Love," and "Over."
Just as he did with his Jungle short film, which was released in conjunction with his album mixtape If You're Reading This It's Too Late, Drizzy's newest visual project weaves together many of the music and motifs off his latest album Views. Drake was reported to have shot videos for "One Dance" and "Child's Play" in South Africa and Houston respectively earlier this year. The footage for the "One Dance" video did make it into the Please Forgive Me final cut.
Released under Cash Money Records, exclusive behind the subscription wall of Apple Music, the singer takes to the continent to a short film which features Popcaan making a trio.
1. Despite featuring on 'One Dance', Wizkid doesn't feature in the short movie. Kyla Reid made the cut
And No. Wizkid did not make the video to ‘One Dance’, neither was he credited in any way on the visual. The singer achieved a milestone, when his writing, production and vocal contributions to the smash hit single assisted in propelling it to the Billboard Hot 100 chart, gifting Drake his first ever number 1 single, a position he enjoyed for 9 straight weeks. That’s the longest anybody has achieved in the UK. Drake’s other collaborator, Kyla made the video.
2. The short movie was shot in two countries - Johannesburg, South Africa and Namibia.
‘Please Forgive Me’ was shot in South African and Johannesburg. The video to the ‘One Dance’ was shot exclusively in SA, with the singer keeping his presence in the country a secret. He was shown love in the country, as he was welcomed by Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe and Deputy Minister Buti Manamela.
“Government did not pay him anything,” Manamela expressed, as reported by All Africa. “We are quite grateful to him and his team to come and be part of this,” the deputy minister continued.
“This is one of the most successful artists in the world; he is an inspiration to many young South Africans. What is more important is that he is committing on a long standing partnership with our country,” Manamela concluded.
3. Fela's 1977 Colonial Mentality was featured in the movie.
Fela, the African musical icon, political activist as well as a Pan-Africanist who advocated for good governance and cultural resuscitation of Africa had one of his most iconic works featured. “Colonial Mentality” deals with the ideals, principles, teachings, and philosophies that are vestiges of colonialism in African societies, barring political, economic, and socio-cultural common sense within the African continent.
The song is taken off his "Sorrow, Tears and Blood" album, which accurately depicts the trail left in the wake of the February 18, 1977, raid by 1,000 armed Nigerian army men on Fela Kuti and his Kalakuta Republic.
4. The villain of the movie is played by Nigerian-born Sonni Chidiebere
Sonni Chidiebere, the Nigerian-Igbo actor has been in several minor roles in some blockbuster Hollywood movies. They include Hotel Rwanda, Blood Diamond, District 9 and Lord of War. Born in Nigeria, he grew up in South Africa, where he started his acting career. He is best known for his role as Emeka in the SABC1 drama series Yizo Yizo in 2004.
