Nigerian novelist dies at 72 in London

Britain based Nigerian novelist Buchi Emecheta died on Wednesday, January 25,2017.

Emecheta who was descibed as "the first successful black woman novelist living in Britain after 1948" is an author of more than 20 books including the popular Second-Class Citizen (1974), The Bride Price (1976), The Slave Girl (1977) and The joys of motherhood (1979). Her several themes of child slavery, motherhood, female independence and freedom through education won her acclaims and honours, including an Order of the British Empire in 2005.

The current president of Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Denja Abdullahi, who confirmed her death, said it was a big loss to the Nigerian literary world and  Emecheta would forever be remembered for championing the agenda of the girl child through her works.

Some of Emecheta's favorite quote were, "A hungry man is an angry one". "Black women all over the world should re-unite and re-examine the way history has portrayed us". "I work toward the liberation of women, but I'm not feminist. I'm just a woman".

Buchi is currently trending on social media with tributes pouring in from her fans and well wishers.
