Peter Horachek named interim coach of Toronto Maple Leafs

Peter Horachek has been named as the Toronto Maple Leafs' interim coach, a day after Randy Carlyle was fired.

Horachek, 54, had been the Maple Leafs' assistant since July 11 " but Carlyle's departure gives him an opportunity at the helm of the NHL team.

Steve Staios, the team's manager of player development, will also support the coaching staff.

Horachek was head coach of the San Antonio Rampage in the American Hockey League before joining the Florida Panthers during the 2013-14 season.

He was previously assistant and, for two years, an associate coach at the Nashville Predators.

Staios joined the Leafs in July 2012, having being a defenceman in the NHL for 18 seasons during his playing career.
