Jollof rice is one of the special delicacies in Nigeria which is used to celebrate nearly every event ranging from wedding parties, burial, graduation ceremonies, naming ceremonies to a bunch of other celebrations.

Every country has their own special way of preparing jollof rice but Nigerian jollof is one of the most sought-after jollof rice in the world.

1. Though Nigerians and Ghanaians claim jollof rice was originally originated by them but historians trace the delicacy to the Senegambian region that was ruled by the Jolof Empire (also known as Wolof or Wollof empire).

2. Jollof rice is originally a fish-based recipe. But now, it's more accepted as a chicken garnished delicacy.

3. In Wolof, it is referred to a ‘one pot’ meal which is where the name jollof was derived.

4. Jollof rice has a dance done in honour of the great cuisine.

5.  Jollof rice is one of the most common dishes consumed in Western Africa from countries like Senegal, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Cameroon, Mali, Togo, Gambia, Nigeria,  to Ghana.

6. Jollof rice is the initiator or inspiration for the Louisianian (USA) dish, Jambalaya (American jollof).

7. The Wolof rice which is now called jollof rice is not a morning meal. It’s an evening meal.
