The Good, The Bad And The Anti-Climatic

Class and style was the name of the game at the just concluded Elite Model Look

Once word of the just concluded Elite Model Look event got out, there was very little doubt that it would be the fashion event to beat thus far this year. For one, the Elite brand is synonymous with top class, having produced some of the world's most successful models such as Gisele Bundchen, Tyra Banks and Naomi Campbell to name a few.

There was also the fact that Elohor Aisien, Creative Director of Elite Model Nigeria had done a considerable amount of work in preserving and promoting the Elite brand here in Nigeria. So with all of this in mind, I set out for the Elite Model Look event expecting a stellar event, and it was - mostly.

From the lush blue carpet which ushered guests in, to the finely garbed guests who exchanged pleasantries and air kisses on said blue carpet, it was clear that it was going to be an evening of finery.

Now anyone who knows anything about events in Nigeria, will attest to the fact that time-keeping is a matter of national concern. Nothing ever starts on time and an event that starts an hour behind schedule is considered to have started 'early'. This was no exception, while the event didn't start 2 hours behind schedule, it didn't exactly start at the stroke of 6pm either.

Genevieve Nnaji, Peter Okoye, Omawumi, Chief Rasaq Okoya and wife, Shade are just a few of the celebrities who graced front row of the runway and a mighty fine runway it was. With the light detailing on it which led up to a stage that was shaped like the entrance to a building, and the lovely models and pieces showcased by designers like Tzar, Sisiano and AD by Agbani Darego, style was the name of the game for the evening.

Yemi Alade is no doubt an engaging performer and she proved this when she took the stage as the final act of the evening. Performing her hit singles, Yemi had the crowd cheering and swaying in their seats. Omawumi also proved to be a fan of Chidinma as the duo took a moment to share a quick greeting when Chidinma came on stage.

On the whole, it proved to be a pleasant evening with the right mix of celebrities and a steady flow of beverage courtesy one of the evening's sponsors, Moet & Chandon. Fade and Ill Rymz also proved to be great hosts as they seamlessly anchored the event. It seemed like the Nigerian fashion scene was about to witness one of its finest events yet, until the winners were announced.

To say that the choice of the male winner, Victor Nwigwe was a surprise would be putting things mildly. There was palpable disappointment in the audience when it became clear that hot favourite, Bolu wouldn't be taking home the prize money. Perhaps the judges saw something in the winner that the rest of us novices couldn't see.

Either way it was a pleasant enough evening, not forgetting DJ Sose's dancing robot!
