A couple in Florida, USA, Shellie Lee Campbell and Brandon Lauderbaugh, has been arrested for causing severe injuries including a facial fracture, broken leg and internal bleeding to their 17-month-old child.

Police report that the couple had abused the innocent child severally and when he suffered severe injuries, they refused to take the child to a hospital.

The police were tipped off by concerned neighbours and they first took the baby to the Lakeland Regional Medical Center before she was transferred to Tampa General Hospital, where doctors found a long list of injuries.

Medical exam revealed that the child suffered the following injuries:

  • a fracture of the left tibia (lower leg) that is four weeks old

  • a lesion on the proximal tibia (upper leg) that is two to four weeks old

  • an acute large right temporal fracture

  • swelling of the forehead

  • contusions under both eyes

  • contusions on her jaw and under her chin

  • and internal bleeding in her skull where the fracture lies

Lauderbaugh and Campbell attempted to cover up the injuries by telling doctors the baby girl suffered from Osteogenesis Imperfecta, a genetic disorder where a person breaks bones easier than normal, but doctors found no medical history of the disorder.

The couple also said the child had recently fallen off of a bed and a tricycle, but her injuries were not consistent with this description.

Instead, doctors say the injuries were caused by blunt force, twisting or shaking, and blunt impact.

Campbell and Lauderbaugh have now been charged with child neglect with great bodily harm.
