With the Nigerian Senate passing Sexual Offences Bill into law with rapists likely to face life imprisonment, many believe those who have the tendency to rape girls and women will have a rethink.
Readers say life imprisonment will curb rape
70% of Pulse Nigeria Poll voters believe the law mandating life jail for rapists would deter them from committing the crime.
But for others, even the death sentence would not be able to stop rapists, citing the example of armed robbers who still rob despite the fact that there is a death penalty for the crime.
Apart from rape carrying a mandatory life sentence, other offences like child sexual tourism, people who deliberately infect others with HIV/AIDS, incest, pornography, sex abuse, and people who deliberately lace drinks with drugs with intent to stupefy and sexually abuse persons with mental disabilities, also attract prison terms.
So for the poll of June 4, this poser was up for a vote:
How Nigeria voted:
70% - Yes, the punishment is appropriate
30% - No, rapists would always find a way to rape
