A housewife in Katisna State has been dragged to court for stealing a day old baby.
Fatima Ibrahim, a 25-year old Katsina State based housewife, has been dragged before a Chief Magistrates’ Court accused of stealing a day-old baby.
The accused, a resident of Danja town in the state, allegedly committed the offence at about 5.00 am on March 10, 2015.
The prosecutor in the case, Inspector Hashimu Musa, narrated in court that the case was reported to the Central Police Station by one Malam Nuhu Umar of Funtua town who complained that the accused abducted the baby at the Comprehensive Health Centre, Funtua, while the staff on duty had gone to say their morning prayers.
Musa alleged that the accused went away with the baby under the pretence of assisting the nursing mother but while sneaking out of the hospital, she dropped her hospital card bearing her name and it was through the card that she was traced and arrested where the baby was rescued from her.
"When interrogated by the police, the accused confessed to have abducted the baby girl. The case was transferred from Funtua Division to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation."
The Chief Magistrate, Hajiya Nafisa Bagiwa, said that the court would not take the plea of the accused, as her case was very serious and ordered the police to continue with the investigation, while the case file should be duplicated and forwarded to the State Ministry of Justice for advice. She also adjourned the case to May 7, for continuation of trial.
