Former National Universities Commission (NUC) Executive Secretary Prof Peter Okebukola has urged the government to ensure that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is being taught in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
Graduates must be computer literate
Okebukola wants graduates to have adequate knowledge of ICT.
Okebukola expressed his concern that the students graduating from Universities do not have the required understanding and education in relation to ICT. He worries that this will cause the country to lag behind in terms of technology and youth innovation.
In his keynote paper, titled Computer education policies in Nigeria: Implementation and pedagogy , which he presented at the third yearly conference of the Faculty of Vocational Education of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) last Tuesday, Okebukola also made mention of the fact that students need to acquire this ICT knowledge in order to develop their skills.
During this presentation, he made example of a doctorate degree holder in Science Education, who did not know the meaning of RAM, a computer language for Random Access Memory.
He maintained that it is only if students improve their ICT knowledge, that the nation will move forward.
