Religious body calls for prayers on October 1st

This appeal was made by the president of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Samson Ayokunle.

According to Daily Post, the religious body wants everyone to pray for peace, stability and unity.

This was stated in a statement by his Special Assistant, Media & Communications, Pastor Adebayo Oladeji.

It read: “The unity of the country has been under a consistent threat as the citizens have been polarised along various divides and the only thing that we could do as the people of God is to intercede for divine intervention.”

“It is widely believed that the country has not been this divided since the unfortunate civil war and it is high time we asked God to deliver Nigeria from all the threats that can throw us into another senseless war.

“The unfortunate quest for secession by the IPOB, its proscription, the military intervention and the on-going controversial debate over the restructuring of the country are indications that the unity and peace of Nigeria are under threats.

“All churches in the country should intercede for the country against needless bloodletting, violence and civil war.

“We should pray for divine wisdom for the leadership at all levels to stop paying lip service to the unity and peace of Nigeria but to have the courage to address the imbalance that is largely responsible for the endless agitation in the country.

“Let us pray against the insecurity occasioned by the criminal activities of the murderous Fulani herdsmen, Boko Haram terrorists and the masterminds of ethnic/religious violence, kidnappings, armed robbery, corruption, and a host of others.

“The menace of Boko Haram terrorists remain unabated despite the victory declared over them by the government as innocent children are being used as suicide bombers to attack innocent people. We should ask God to give us a permanent solution to this problem in Jesus name.”

Meanwhile, a Catholic priest named Gabriel Teruwose Ngbea, wants the Federal Government to ban CAN and Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI).

According to the reverend father, these two religious groups and various pilgrims welfare boards should all be banned, Vanguard reports.

In his words, “CAN and JNI should be proscribed because they have become political organisations that are used to advance political interests.”

Concerning the welfare boards, Dr Ngbea says, “Secularism is not an option, but the only solution to the Nigerian question.”

This was stated at the public presentation of the priest’s book entitled: ‘Constitutional Misconception of Secularism and Implications for Politics and Religion in Nigeria’ in Abuja.
