The assistant director, Federal Capital Territory ( FCT) Directorate of Road Traffic Services, Mr Aminu Iro, is speaking on the causes of accidents.

“The way we use jeeps and SUVs in this country is not the way they have been designed. Jeeps are higher gravity vehicles, which have not been designed for the kind of speed we subject them to on our highways.

Again, most of the tyres are not designed for the kind of speed they are usually subjected to in Nigeria. Each tyre has its limits of weight and speed capacity. And for the fact that jeep tyres are big, they are not supposed to be subjected to being driven above 100/120km per hour.

Now, those tyres which have small range between them and the rim, can be subjected to high speed. And in a case of tyre burst, the damage can be minimal,” he added.

A recent example of this is the fatal car crash that killed the former Minister of state for Labor and Employment, James Ocholi, his wife and son.

Over speeding and tyre burst led to the somersaulting of Ocholi's SUV, Lexus LX570, which resulted in their deaths.
