3 other times Michael Oliver has gotten on the nerves of players

With the second-leg tie going into extra time and Juventus still with a huge chance of overturning a 3-0 first leg deficit to qualify, Oliver pointed to the spot after a Medhi Benatia barged into Lucas Vazquez in the Juventus 18-yard-box.

Juventus’ legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was sent off for protesting before Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up to score to sendReal Madrid to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

The debates have continuedwhether the 33-year-old referee’s decision was right or wrong.

But this is not the first Oliver has left players scratching their heads in confusion.  These are three other moments

1. Red card to Angel Di Maria

Manchester United fans were bewildered when the referee sent Di Maria off in a 2-1 FA Cup loss to Arsenal in March 2015.

Oliver had shown Di Maria a yellow card for a dive but while protesting, the then Manchester United player pulled the shirt of the referee.

Oliver wasn’t having it, a second yellow card and Di Maria was off.

2. The incident with Joe Hart

Michael Oliver is not scared of drama or controversial decisions but in  November 2014 he took a completely different route choosing to keep his cards in his pocket.

But it was a very odd decision as Joe Hart had sprinted out of his box to square up to the referee in protest.

It was shocking that Oliver didn't punish Hart and again it was controversial.

3. Red card for Drinkwater

Danny Drinkwater then of Leicester City lost it when he was sent off by Michael Oliver for a foul on Memphis Depay back in 2016.

Oliver flashed a yellow card for Drinkwater, his second of the game but the midfielder was furious, swearing at the referee as he left the field.
