Over the years, the carmaker has had some amazing milestones.

Initially called Bayerische Flugzeug-Werke (BFW), it has managed to survive a lot of hard times.

These include successfully going from motorcycle production to automobile manufacturing in 1928, to six-cylinder engines, and aero engines.

BMW survived the war with it's first post-war called 501 in 1948, made the world's first light alloy V8 engine, and built the "bubble car" in 1954.

In recent times, the i8 petrol-electric sports car was produced in 2014, then the all-new BMW 7-series, launched in 2015.

This car has been dubbed 'BMW's most advanced car to date.'

BMW's latest model is the M2, which has been modified into an official safety car.

The carmaker is expected to release a new car during it's centenary celebrations, which kicked off today with a campaign entitled 'The Next 100 Years'.
