Ottis Gibson felt England proved they are not overly reliant on James Anderson and Stuart Broad on day one of the third Test with South Africa.

Anderson is England's leading Test wicket-taker with 427 scalps, while Broad boasts 323 victims from 22 fewer matches than his new-ball partner.

However, as the experienced duo combined for figures of 1-104 at the Wanderers on Thursday, it was fellow pacemen Steven Finn and Ben Stokes who impressed, sharing four wickets to help restrict South Africa to 267-7.

Finn proved a particular threat as he ousted Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis en route to figures of 2-50 from 18 overs.

Bowling coach Gibson told the ECB's official website: "It certainly says that we're not too reliant on Jimmy and Broady.

"Ben Stokes has improved a lot in the last six months as a Test match bowler and Finny has been outstanding ever since he has come back into the team. It was good that those two got wickets."

Praising the form of Finn, Gibson added: "I'm very impressed with him; since he came back into the side last summer he's certainly proved himself to be an outstanding fast bowler.

"He can play a huge role for England in the coming years."

Former England captain Nasser Hussain reserved high praise for an afternoon-session spell from Finn that saw him have Amla caught behind for 40.

In his role as an analyst for Sky Sports, Hussain said: "That was his [Finn's] best spell of bowling in an England shirt. In that little spell between lunch and tea he was absolutely magnificent.

"He had pace, bounce, the right length and movement. Everything was absolutely perfect."
