According to reports, oil spills in the area has affected the indigenes’ drinking water and source of livelihood – Fishing.

Speaking to Punch, Mr. Bari-ara Kpalap said that the rate of pollution in Ogoni land is expanding rapidly.

Kpalap also said “Our expectations have not been met because since June 2, 2016 to date, we cannot point to anything concrete that the Federal Government has done that is on the ground today in the history of the clean-up of Ogoniland.

“The inauguration was done in June 2016 and they did another groundbreaking for the construction of the integrated contaminated soil management. As we speak, construction or clean-up of the area is in comatose.

“No clean water in the area; the drinkable water in Ogoniland is contaminated and have led to increase in health challenges.

“If by the end of December this year, we did not see anything that convinces us that the government is ready to commence the clean-up, we will go back to the trenches and embark on a peaceful campaign against the Federal Government, until government match its words with action.”

One year after

The Federal Government in 2016, flagged-off the Ogoni clean-up exercise.

The exercise is in-line with recommendations made by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
