No guarantees for Robert Griffin III at Browns

Just because the Cleveland Browns traded out of the number two spot in the NFL Draft, it does not mean they have selected Robert Griffin III as their starting quarterback.

The team's executive vice-president of football operations, Sashi Brown, said on Thursday the Browns will have a camp competition between the newly acquired Griffin, incumbent starter Josh McCown, Austin Davis and Connor Shaw.

"We won't be panicked," he told a news conference.

"We feel those guys are going to compete their butts off, get into the system and we'll evaluate it as time bears out.

"We haven't solved that [position] by any stretch by acquiring Griffin, but that's certainly one of the things that we were able to accomplish this off-season."

Griffin, the number two overall pick by the Washington Redskins in the 2012 NFL Draft, signed a two-year, $15million deal with the Browns last month.

"Robert isn't even our starting quarterback yet," Brown said.

"He has to earn that spot. I would say no there. Is he another piece of our roster? Absolutely.

"In terms of bringing Robert to Cleveland, we are excited about the potential for him to earn that starting job.

"On its merits of number two versus what we were able to acquire, this was the right choice for building our roster and where we sit now."
