A landmark concussion settlement with past players - worth a potential $1billion - was reached in April, but could be delayed after former player Craig Heimburger filed an appeal.

And, as efforts to improve safety in the sport are explored, some experts predict drastic changes.

"Can I see a time without helmets? Yes," Dr John York - co-chairman of the San Francisco 49ers - is quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

"It's not around the corner, but I can see it."
