Veteran Jason Richardson announces retirement
NBA veteran Jason Richardson has announced his retirement from basketball on Wednesday.
Richardson used social media to reveal the news, despite signing a non-guaranteed contract with the Atlanta Hawks in August.
The 34-year-old's decision to walk away comes after 14 years in the NBA, where he played for the Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns, Charlotte Bobcats and Golden State Warriors.
"Today is a bitter sweet moment for me. I'm officially announcing my retirement from pro basketball," Richardson wrote via Instagram.
"I'd like to thank the organizations and fans in Charlotte, Phoenix, Orlando, Philly and especially The Bay Area for their loyal support the past 14 years. Walking away was the hardest decision I had to make but choosing my health and spending time with my family is more important to me! God bless!"
Richardson, who made 34 appearances for the 76ers last season, averaged 17.1 points, five rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.2 steals in 842 NBA starts over his career.
He was drafted by the Warriors in 2001 with the number five pick.
