Liverpool legend shares his thoughts on Premier League 2016/17 season

Liverpool legend, John Barnes have tipped Manchester City, United and Chelsea to finish as the top three teams of this 2016/17 Premier League season.

Barnes who won the English top division title twice with Liverpool, sat down with for an interview where he also shared his thoughts on his former clubs, including Watford and Newcastle United.

The former England international said Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea will be the top three sides at the end of the season as they have better players and a good manager

“The exciting thing about this season is that we have five of the best managers in five of the best clubs,” he says in the video interview.

He further opined that fans undermined the likes of Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal and Manuel Pellegrini last season, blaming them for the clubs’ failings last season.

With the likes of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, Mourinho at Manchester United and Antonio Conte at Chelsea, Barnes believes that players will now be held accountable if anything goes wrong.

“Fans will not blame the managers anymore so you will see the players taking responsibility,” the Super Sports pundit says.

Speaking on his former side, Liverpool, Barnes says he does not expect the club to win the Premier League this season but urge them to stick with Jurgen Klopp.

“Why should Liverpool players expect to win the league when City  united and Chelsea have better players and good managers,” he says during the chat.

“We have to continue building. Maybe finish top four and build for the future rather than saying if they don’t win the league we will sack Klopp.

For Watford, Barnes is puzzled on why Quique Flores was fired after last season despite finishing mid-table.

“Staying in the premier League is what they want to do. That is the same for most of the teams apart from 10 teams who want to qualify for the ,” the 52-year-old said.

He also spoke on Newcastle United and revealed his thoughts on why Rafa Benitez chose to remain at the club despite their relegation last season.

Barnes believes that the new TV money in the Premier League and the lure of managing in English top flight have made Benitez stay back with the club.
