Report shows a 10% increase in pedestrian deaths

In 2015, there was an estimated 10% increase in the number of pedestrian deaths in the United States of America.

This data is from a report released by the Governors Highway Safety Association, Associated Press reports.

According to this report, this increase can be attributed to the rising number of pedestrians distracted by their phones.

Richard Retting, co-author of the report, said these pedestrian deaths account for 15% of total traffic deaths.

"This is really sobering news. Pedestrian safety is clearly a growing problem across the country," he said.

The largest number of pedestrian deaths in the first six months of 2015 were found in California, Florida, Texas and New York.
