In abolishing the rule on Monday, March 16, Justice Mohammed Idris declared that the restriction was a violation of the citizens’ right to personal liberty and freedom of movement as provided by the Nigerian Constitution.

The court therefore stripped the state government of the power to arrest any citizen found violating the restriction.

The monthly sanitation exercise is usually observed from 7am and 10am on every last Saturday of the month.

The suit to declare the restriction illegal was instituted by Lagos-based lawyer and human rights activist, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa.
