Mercedes' Pascal Wehrlein goes quickest in Spielberg
Rain saw Formula One testing in Spielberg severely delayed on Tuesday, although Pascal Wehrlein and Max Verstappen enjoyed productive outings at the Austrian circuit.
Two days after Nico Rosberg beat Lewis Hamilton to clinch victory in the Austrian Grand Prix, teams were kept kicking their heels until after lunch due to rain and storms.
The afternoon session was therefore extended for two hours and it was Mercedes' Wehrlein who went quickest on the opening day - recording a time of one minute and 11.005 seconds during his 67 laps.
The 20-year-old reserve driver was selected ahead of Rosberg after Mercedes opted for a reshuffle due to the weather conditions. Force India's Esteban Ocon was wedged in between Wehrlein and Verstappen.
Verstappen also enjoyed a solid day, completing 97 laps - more than anyone else - and posting a quickest time of 1:11.328secs.
Ferrari handed a debut to academy product Antonio Fuoco and the Italian repaid them with a fourth-placed finish from his 71 laps, although a spin at turn one curtailed his day.
Fuoco was not hurt but told Ferrari's official website: "I am very angry with myself for making a mistake, but getting behind the wheel of a Ferrari has always been my dream and it finally came true.
"All the same, I am pleased with the work I was able to do, gathering useful data for the team, even if the rain affected our programme.
"I would like to thank Scuderia Ferrari for the opportunity they have given me."
