Derek Stepan suffers fractured fibula

The Rangers announced on Wednesday that Stepan - initially returning from a leg injury - sustained a non-displaced fracture to the fibula during a conditioning drill.

Stepan, who scored 17 goals and 57 points as the Eastern Conference champions reached the Stanley Cup Final last season, is now expected to miss the start of the NHL campaign.

"He was feeling real good the last 48 hours. He came in this morning, had a third X-ray done," said Rangers coach Alain Vigneault.

"Everything looked normal and good to go, stepped on the ice and unfortunately he got hurt. Normally, a broken whatever is four to six [weeks]."

Vigneault added: "I didn't see it [the fall].

"My understanding is that he took a couple strides and went down."
