Everyone is talking about the bizarre penalty against Paris Saint-Germain

Ronaldo levelled the scores for Real Madrid in the 45th minute from the spot and for the penalty, the ball appeared to pop up in the second before he struck, essentially turning his spot-kick into a volley which flew past Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

The penalty sparked several theories as many believed that he touched the ball with his standing foot before striking it.

Replays, however, showed that he didn’t touch the ball, but made contact with the turf underneath the ball causing it to move.

Allowed or not

His former teammate Rio Ferdinand, however, claimed Ronaldo used to practice the technique of touching the ball before a penalty during his time at Manchester United.

“He used to do that in training you know!” Ferdinand told .

“He used to mess about in training and do it but to do it in a game, I’m not saying he means it, but he used to do it. I swear to you, crazy but he used to do it.”

But touching the ball before kicking the ball would have made the penalty void as the laws of the game stipulate that.

Former Premier League referee Graham Poll opined that the penalty should have been retaken because the ball had moved whether Ronaldo had touched it or not.

“You cannot blame the officials for missing it, as it would have been almost impossible to spot in real time,” Poll told .

“But with the benefit of slow-motion replays, we can see that the ball bobbled up as Ronaldo planted his left foot, before slamming it home with his right.

“The ball must be stationary when a penalty is struck so, had the referee spotted it, the kick would have been retaken.”

The penalty also sparked reactions on social media.
