New Zealand bowler Adam Milne has failed to shake off a heel injury and will miss his country's one-day international series against England, with Ben Wheeler taking his place.

Milne was hurt in the Cricket World Cup and duly ruled out of the Black Caps' two Tests against England.

He will now sit out the five ODIs that follow, providing an opportunity to impress for the uncapped Wheeler, who took five wickets against Somerset in New Zealand's opening tour match.

"It's been a hard time for Adam," said New Zealand coach Mike Hesson.

"He has worked really hard to get back to full fitness but unfortunately he is still suffering pain and is unable to bowl at his best.

"He is a young man and has a long career ahead of him so we are focused on making sure he is 100 per cent fit before he returns."

On the call-up for Wheeler, Hesson added: "He showed great composure against Somerset and he has a big future.

"It will be good to have him in the Black Caps ODI squad to continue his development."

The first ODI between England and New Zealand takes place at Edgbaston on June 9.
