Mitchell who played for Clyde, Falkirk and Queen of the South died instantly after he was struck by a moving train near Cornton, Stirling, Scotland.

He moved to Bully Wee last summer to before leaving in January for a new full-time job.

One of his former clubs, Clyde have confirmed the death and a minute's silence was held on Sunday before their game gainst Queen's Park at Broadwood in honour of the footballer.

“Everyone connected with Clyde was shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Chris Mitchell, at the age of just 27, this weekend.Chris featured for the Bully Wee during the first half of the 2015-16 season, after joining the club from Queen of the South last summer,” a statement on Clyde's website read.

“He made a significant contribution to the campaign, featuring in 18 matches and recording six assists.

“In January, it was announced that Chris was leaving the club, due to the travel commitments required of a new full-time job.”

Throughout his football career, Chris also played for Ayr and Bradford, and won seven caps at Scotland Under 21 level.
