Champions League actions continued on Wednesday, February 14 as football enthusiasts rounded up Valentine's Day celebration by watching some of the biggest names in world football.
Real Madrid beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 at the Bernabeu while Liverpool thrashed Porto 5-0 at the Estádio do Dragão as first leg second round actions continue
These are five things we learnt on the night.
1. Real Madrid are still elite
After playing some of the most exciting football in the last two years that resulted in back to back Champions League titles, Real Madrid were brought down to earth with some dismal results.
Their La Liga form has been pitiful-although it has gotten better in recent weeks- and are just fourth on the league table way off rivals and champions-elect Barcelona. They also finished second in their Champions League group below Tottenham to put their season in disarray and Zinedine Zidane's job under threat.
In their biggest game of the season, they stepped up to remind everyone that they are still elite.
2. Ronaldo is not done
At the age of 33, Ronaldo is undoubtedly on an avoidable decline and his slow start to the season is an evidence of that. But all of a sudden he has regained some kind of form and suddenly had 23 goals prior to the clash against Paris Saint-Germain. Two goals in Madrid’S 3-1 win is a proof that Ronaldo is not going anywhere soon.
3. MCN and Paris Saint-Germain fail to take the opportunity
Paris Saint-Germain in the summer spent big to get Neymar from Barcelona and breakout star of 2017 Kylian Mbappe with the aim of dominating Europe.
Along with Edinson Cavani, Mbappe and Neymar have clicked right away, scoring tons of goals for fun.
But against Real Madrid, they failed to show up. Although they started well, MCN in the second half was a huge letdown. Neymar was so much on his own, Mbappe seemed unusually overwhelmed while Cavani was isolated a and could not get any chance.
Paris Saint-Germain manager Unai Emery will also take the blame for failing to make an impact with his substitution as Real Madrid's changes won them the game late on.
This is a huge opportunity missed for Paris Saint-Germain to announce themselves as one of the European elites. Another opportunity awaits them in the second leg.
4. Salah’s amazing season continues
Any doubt about Mohamed Salah should have been cleared by now. Salah scored in Liverpool’s 5-0 demolition of Porto to continue his amazing debut season at Liverpool.
His goal of the night is his 30th of the season in all competition, the second quickest player to reach the mark for Liverpool. What a signing.
5. Porto have fallen way behind
The most decorated Portuguese team in international competitions, Porto have two European Cup/Champions League titles and have also won the UEFA Cup/Europa League twice. Together with Barcelona and Real Madrid, they have the most appearances in the Champions League.
One of Europe’s traditional clubs, but Porto have over the years fallen behind the rest of the European big clubs.
In the last 10 years, the Portuguese giants have only been able to get past the second round just twice. This season it's very unlikely they will make it past the second round again after losing the first leg at home 5-0 to Liverpool.
