Rapper talks music business in Nigeria [Video]
Rapper A-Q lectures on the business of music and where Nigerian artistes are getting it wrong.
“If you’re making a lot of income and you cannot put your hand on if you’re being cheated, if you’re being ripped off, how much is coming in, but because you are making a lot of income you are satisfied, and you are not trying to expand opportunities, that’s the case of Nigerian artistes, once they start getting endorsements, shows and their music starts selling, they just fold up”, adding that most of the artistes that are guilty of this are record label owners, and tend to regard as a failure any artist they sign that doesn’t get endorsements and shows or sell as much units as they do, without exploring other ways to make the income flow.
He disapproves of Banky’s E.M.E for not maximizing the full potential of Skales while he was with them. “Like I was totally shocked when E.M.E released a statement that Skales was not productive as an artiste, I don’t know the words that they used but I was shocked, how can you say household name, It is your fault if you cannot make a household name generate as much income, so I think the problem is artistes have refused to learn the music business”.
He gives some practical examples in his case of how he was able to track his album sales in Tanzania, and the potential that such analytical insights can do for the business addressing Hip hop acts in particular that they are not doing enough to get recognized and generate income.
He admonishes Nigerian artistes to step up, as no one will hand it to them, and not be self-satisfied with little achievement, also addressing the spate of too many collaborations out there that are necessarily not the way forward. But rather they should look out for new revenue streams, and not try looking for the next hit single pursuing producers all over the place.
“Too many collaborations going on now because everybody wants to put who’s popping on his album and singles”, A-Q says.
