Amnesty International has says it has “credible evidence”, that thousands of Turkish soldiers supposedly involved in the failed military coup are being raped, starved and left without water.

Some shocking pictures of the soldiers, who are being held in cramped and inhumane conditions, in makeshift cells, emerged on social media.

John Dalhuisen, Amnesty’s European director said "Reports of abuse including beatings and rape in detention are extremely alarming, especially given the scale of detentions that we have seen in the past week.

He further went on to say "It is absolutely imperative that the Turkish authorities halt these abhorrent practices and allow international monitors to visit all these detainees in the places they are being held."

"Reports of abuse including beatings and rape in detention are extremely alarming, especially given the scale of detentions that we have seen in the past week."

Over 290 people have died since the night of the bloody coup and President Erdogan has declared a three month state of emergency.
