VC urges new student union executives to 'serve and lead'

Executives of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) Students Union have been advised to be put service ahead of power in their dealings.

FUTA Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adebiyi Daramola, gave the charge at the inauguration of the new set of leaders, The Nation reports.

Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Development), Prof Tolulope Akinbogun, the Vice-Chancellor advised them to let power corrupt them.

“The underlying principles here are service, character and teamwork," he said.

"Do not let your position get into your heads

"You must be humble and approach every situation with maturity.

"The character you display during your tenure will show the kind of persons you are.

"Strive to serve others, even as you lead,” he said

Daramola promised that the institution would give the students local and international trainings as is its culture.

“We have consistently been sponsoring student leaders to attend leadership training programmes within and outside Nigeria for the past six years."

Speaking on behalf of the other members, the SUG President, Fowobaje Oluwaseun, promised to take students unionism to a positive level with the aim of having a crisis free tenure.
