The American carded 15 under par for the tournament at St Andrews, which ran into Monday due to stormy weekend weather, and went on to triumph in a three-way play-off against Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman at the home of golf.

It was the second major of Johnson's career after he won The Masters in 2007 and bumps his ranking up from 25.

Oosthuizen is now just one spot below after rising four places to 13th, while Leishman jumps a hefty 34 spots to 27.

Padraig Harrington, a two-time Open champion, was in contention heading into the last day before shooting a final round three-over-par 75 to eventually tie for 20th. His performance helped him climb back into the top 100, though, and he sits at 95.

Tiger Woods' misery continued as he failed to make the cut, and the 14-time major champion slipped a further 17 places to world number 258.
