Anti-Islamic cartoons that led to the Charlie Hebdo attack

Twelve staffs of a satirical newspaper - Charlie Hebdo were killed on Wednesday, January 7 by suspected Al-Qaeda terrorists in Paris, France.

Charlie Hebdo magazine is popular for anti-Islamic caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed, as well as critical depictions of Catholics, Jews and French politicians, which regularly stirred controversy.

The magazine first gained popularity in 2006 for its portrayal of a sobbing Muhammad, under the headline "Mahomet débordé par les intégristes" ("Muhammad overwhelmed by fundamentalists"), which led to a lawsuit by the French Council for the Muslim Faith.

The first issue of Charlie Hebdo is said to be what made the magazine a target for terrorist attack.
