Just like thousands of other fans, I've had Reekado Banks’ impressive album “Spotlight” in heavy rotation since its May release.
For many months, Reekado Banks had no misstep. Every song was a hit, every video, interview and performance was an improvement on the previous one, as he ran through the year with a creative streak that has seen him grow tremendously.
But then I watched Reekado's latest video for ‘Problem,’ and, for the first time in his career, I thought, "This isn’t a problem. This video is actually a problem to him.”
One of the many drop-everything-and-listen tracks from “Spotlight”, ‘Problem’ is a darkly entertaining dance anthem that generates an amazing picture of a lady’s booty, via muscular beats from Babyfresh, and a minimalist performance by the singer, under the watchful supervision of Don Jazzy.
The video released by Reekado Banks, is a House Party shot by AJE Filmworks, and released through Youtube, and it totally missed the mark. Not only is the storyline disjointed and lacking in convincing acting, but the shots are delayed with an uninspired scene where reactions are replaced by hugely disruptive emoticons.
The party sometimes feels like a clichéd behind-the-scene shot with very little thought thrown into generating a cohesive storyline. A song about asses, has no definitive ass to carry the video. Just random vixens and an attempt to throw in humour, by casting a dwarf couple.
After a year full of nothing but wins, this video fails to carry the single, and while it doesn’t detract from Reekado's magnificent year or his fantastic album, it does serve as a rare reminder that Mavin Records is a label run by people, and they sometimes make mistakes too.
