Benitez was appointed as coach after the with the club facing relegation from the Premier League 10 matches from the end of the season.

Benitez took over on an initial three-year deal while media reports said there was also an opt-out clause if Newcastle are relegated this season.

This is a return to the Premier League for Bentiez who managed Chelsea temporarily from November, 2012 to May 2013.

He won the Europa League with Chelsea after replacing sacked coach, Roberto Di Matteo.
