Stanton unseats Frazier to win Home Run Derby

Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton won the 2016 Home Run Derby at Petco Park in San Diego with a record 61 home runs on Monday.

Stanton defeated defending champion Todd Frazier in the final round with 20 home runs, matching his total from the first half of the season.

He also hit 24 in the first round, becoming the first player to reach 20 homers in two different rounds during a single derby.

Despite struggling in the regular season at times this year, Stanton proved why he is widely regarded as the most powerful player in MLB.

Frazier, like Stanton, has struggled to hit for his new team - the Chicago White Sox - this season, but he has now finished first and second in the last two editions.

Petco Park, which is one of the most difficult ballparks to hit home runs in during normal circumstances, saw 108 baseballs fly over the fence in round one alone on Monday.

Only 101 home runs have been hit in the stadium all season.

Stanton is not in Tuesday's All-Star game, but he proved his choice to come and compete in the Home Run Derby was a smart and entertaining decision.
